Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday. On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, Touro University California participated in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving. This year, our campaign supports the creation of a Meditation Garden, spearheaded by the Wellness, Academic Accomplishment, Resilience and Mindfulness (WARM) Program. WARM is a multi-faceted program which aims to create the wholesome physician of tomorrow; one whose self-care is the source of compassion and quality care for patients and develops resilience to become a lifelong learner. (See WARM's First Place win at ACOFP-CA!)
An outdoor garden in which students, faculty, and staff can have a quiet space to take advantage of fresh air and sunlight would help reinforce the lessons of the WARM curriculum. Additionally, the Meditation Garden would provide opportunities and tools to develop mindfulness skills, self-care behavior, and resilience for Touro students under high-stress conditions.
The intended Meditation Garden would be located behind the old hospital building (H-1), which already has existing benches, trees, and planting squares, which is an ideal space for an outdoor meditation area. It will be open to all students, faculty, and staff of Touro University California, and will be inclusive of multiple cultures and religions.
This currently unused space could easily be turned into our campus oasis with your help:
- An enclosed 212-foot fence for the space from the adjacent parking areas and streets ($7,550)
- Planting drought-resistant plants (i.e. succulents, grasses) in the currently unused brick flowering/planting squares around current trees ($700)
- Placing an outdoor storage box (with a lock) to keep yoga mats and meditation cushions ($100)
- Adding a few soothing meditation motif decorations ($50)
Touro hopes to transform the area into a welcome oasis with a total goal of $8,400 for #GivingTuesday, like the examples seen below.
The maintenance of the garden would be covered by our fantastic Facilities Department with supplemental work study and volunteer positions, ensuring cleanliness and tidiness with built-in stress relief for those involved! The sustainable planting requires very little to no watering - a huge plus in the California climate!
Can we count on your support, please? The Touro community of students, faculty, and staff appreciates your generosity on this national day of giving as a vital part of our campus. Our goal of $8,400 is an exciting challenge and we can't do it without you! Remember to share your support across all of your social platforms with the hashtag #TUCGivingTuesday on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube!
